KUCHING: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has pledged a grant of RM10,000 to the Sarawak Deaf Community Services Association, reaffirming his strong support for the empowerment and inclusion of the deaf community in Sarawak.

As the guest of honour during a Hari Raya gathering hosted by the association last night ( April 12) , Yap expressed heartfelt gratitude for being part of the celebration and praised the organisation’s ongoing efforts in promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities.

“Your commitment to empowering the deaf community through Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) education, advocacy, and essential services is not just commendable—it is crucial to building a more inclusive society,” he said.

He noted that the deaf community continues to face challenges in accessing education, healthcare, and employment, but emphasised that the association’s initiatives are making a meaningful difference in bridging these gaps.

Yap lauded the association’s upcoming plans, which include the official launch of its new headquarters, expanding BIM classes to the hearing community to foster understanding, offering financial support for BIM students to develop future interpreters, and extending services to rural areas across Sarawak.

“These initiatives are vital steps toward ensuring that deaf individuals throughout the state are not left behind,” he said.

While highlighting the Sarawak government’s commitment to policies that safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, Yap stressed that real progress comes when communities, corporations, and individuals come together in support.

To reinforce his support, Yap announced a contribution of a grant to assist the association in carrying out its impactful programs, events, and outreach activities.

“Your work is not just about providing services—it is about restoring dignity, creating independence, and opening up opportunities,” he said.

“We are inspired by your dedication and hope this grant helps amplify your efforts in education, advocacy, and community engagement.”
