BINTULU: A total of 600 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Baru participated in The Little Eco Warriors: The 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Quest workshop recently, aimed at instilling sustainable waste management practices among primary school students from an early age.
The workshop was a collaboration between the Faculty of Humanities, Management, and Science (FKPS) at Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB), Bintulu Development Authority, and Sarawak Eco Warriors.
According to senior lecturer from FKPS, UPMKB, Dr Karmilah Abdullah, early education on sustainability is key to raising awareness in young environmental advocates.
“Introducing the 3R concept to students at a young age helps them realise that even small, collective, and consistent actions can have a significant positive impact on the environment,” she said in a statement yesterday (Jan 17).
Meanwhile, chairman of Seroja Group and trainer, councillor Raden Khairulzaman Raden Bustari, highlighted that the workshop featured a variety of activities, interactive games, and demonstrations on how to use recycling bins.
“These activities not only made the learning process enjoyable but also increased students’ understanding of the importance of proper waste management.
“Such activities sparked the students’ interest, and I hope this initiative will continue, inspiring greater awareness and nurturing environmental heroes across generations,” he added.
Also present was Bintulu Development Authority representative Bahaman Ali Jennah Abdul Latip.
