Workers stop fire from spreading in furniture factory

SIBU: Swift action by furniture factory workers at Jalan Rantau Panjang prevented a fire from causing extensive damage early this morning (Jan 9).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Sungai Merah station were dispatched to the scene following a distress call at 5.57 am.

Upon arrival, the fire was found to have involved two saw blade sharpening machines in the moulting block, resulting in only one per cent damage to the entire factory. 

The factory workers had already extinguished the flames using 30 fire extinguishers before the team arrived. 

The team took over to douse the remaining embers and ensure there was no risk of reignition. 

Once the situation was deemed safe, the operation was concluded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
