SERIAN: The state government has approved the 20-km Temong/Tepoi/Sadir/Annah Rais Road, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“It will be done beginning next year. We have allocation for this under the 12th Malaysia Plan, under alternative funding. The design is already completed under the Public Works Department (JKR),” he said.
“This is what Datuk Amar Michael Manyin Jawong (Tebedu incumbent) has given to the people of Serian before he retires,” he said, referring to Manyin’s appeal for the project to be implemented.
He said this when officiating at the launching ceremony of the Serian Division Sarawak Government Administrative Centre here on Saturday (Nov 27).
In his speech earlier, Manyin said the road was expected to cost about RM200 million. He said once it was completed, people coming from Kuching to Tebedu would be able to shorten their journey by about 30 to 50 minutes.
Abang Johari also recorded his appreciation for Manyin’s service and contributions to the people of Serian.
“He has announced his retirement and resignation, and I would like to thank him very much. I am sure that the young people will continue what has been done by Manyin for the community,” he said.
When asked by reporters who would replace Manyin, he replied that there was already a replacement in mind but to wait for his announcement.
The chief minister also announced that the government had decided to upgrade Siburan to district status while Balai Ringin would be upgraded to a sub-district.
“This means that Siburan will have all the necessary prerequisites and infrastructure for a district. We will appoint a District Officer in Siburan as a new district in Serian Division,” he said.
He said this was in line with Serian’s development, adding that services must also be elevated.
Abang Johari said that the upgrading of Siburan’s status would have significant positive implications, especially concerning economic benefits and access to the market.
Manyin in his speech also expressed his hope that Serian’s new township would proceed next year or even before the end of this year.
“The plan has been done and we hope it will proceed because the people of Serian need a new township. This new township will consist of at least 120 shop lots,” he said.
At the same time, he said the people of Serian should be very grateful for the various large projects implemented here, which cost millions of ringgit.
