KUCHING: As we step into 2025, it is worth reflecting on the aspirations and insights of those who have witnessed decades of growth and transformation.
The older generation offers invaluable wisdom that can guide the younger generation toward a more harmonious and fulfilling future. Their hopes and dreams for society and the personal lessons they impart call attention to their care for well-being, unity, and personal growth.
In a series of interviews, Sarawak Tribune spoke to four individuals from the older generation to learn their wishes for the year ahead.
Hadinah Taha, 56
I truly hope that education becomes more accessible and inclusive, especially for children in rural areas. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow, regardless of where they come from. I would love to see better resources in schools, more dedicated teachers, and programmes that inspire creativity and innovation in the younger generation. My wish for 2025 is to stay active and healthy so I can continue supporting my family and enjoying the little joys of life, like cooking for my grandchildren and tending to my garden. Being able to watch my family grow and succeed brings me immense happiness. Always value your time with your loved ones. Life is precious, and the moments you share with family and friends are what truly matter in the end. Never let the busyness of life keep you from appreciating the people around you.
Jejah Baee, 70
I would love to see more unity and understanding among different races and cultures. If people take the time to embrace and respect one another’s differences, the world will be a much better place. It’s important for the younger generation to grow up in a society where everyone is treated equally and with kindness. My personal wish is to reconnect with old friends and strengthen my social circle. There’s something so comforting about reminiscing and sharing laughs with people who’ve known you for years. I want to make more time for these meaningful relationships in 2025. Be patient and learn the value of listening. When you take the time to understand others and their perspectives, you not only help build stronger relationships but also grow as a person. Patience and understanding can solve a lot of problems.
Mohamad Sapai, 73
I hope there are more stable job opportunities and fair wages for the younger generation. It’s hard to see young people working so hard yet struggling to make ends meet. A stable career allows people to build their lives with dignity and confidence, and I believe everyone deserves that chance. My goal is to finally complete my memoir. I’ve lived a long and eventful life, and I think it’s time to document my experiences, lessons, and memories so my children and grandchildren can understand where they come from. It’s my way of leaving a legacy for them. Work hard, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey. Celebrate the little victories and take time to appreciate the beauty in everyday life. Life isn’t just about reaching your destination—it’s about making the most of the moments along the way.
Apandi Salleh, 70
I wish for more affordable housing for families. A home is the foundation of a happy and secure life, and everyone deserves a safe and comfortable place to call their own. I hope governments and communities work together to make this a reality.
My wish is to spend more time volunteering in my community. I want to give back by helping those in need, whether it’s through charity work, teaching skills, or simply being there for someone who needs a listening ear. Giving back brings me a sense of purpose and joy. Take care of your health while you’re young. Eat well, exercise, and make time for rest. It’s easy to take your health for granted, but trust me, the habits you form now will impact your future. A strong and healthy body will allow you to chase your dreams with full energy and enthusiasm.
