SIBURAN: Datuk Willie Mongin returned the trust of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) by winning the Puncak Borneo seat with style.
Willie, who is the incumbent, garnered 29,457 votes to win the seat with 13,338 votes majority.
Contesting on the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS-PBB) ticket, Willie defeat Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate from PKR Diog Dios who garnered 16,119 votes and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) candidate Iana Akam who got 5,578 votes.
Following the sounding victory, Willie proved his critic wrong.
Prior to his nomination as GPS candidate for the seat, many undermine his popularity and chances to retain the seat.
In the 2018 14th general election Willie contesting as PKR candidate won the seat with 4005 votes majority, defeating Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Genot @ Jeannoth Sinel and Buln Ribos of STAR.
He later left PKR to join BERSATU before applying to join PBB and was accepted few months before PRU15.
Puncak Borneo has 79,969 registered voters, comprising 79,150 ordinary voters, 817 police voters and spouses and two overseas postal voters.
