KUCHING: A stringent review process and incomplete application documents have been identified as the primary reasons for delays in the issuance of Motor Vehicle Trade Licences (LPKM) in Sarawak.
This was revealed during a meeting between Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin and the Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) at Bangunan Baitulmakmur.
The review, which JPJ Sarawak is currently conducting, involves thoroughly vetting companies previously approved for trade licences to prevent misuse of trade plates.
At the same time, the department has reported receiving numerous applications with incomplete documentation, further slowing down the approval process.
To address the situation, Lee proposed implementing conditional approvals for LPKM applications.
This approach would enable businesses to continue operations while ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
In a press release yesterday, JPJ Sarawak said it had agreed to Lee’s proposal, emphasising that applicants must meet the criteria under one of three categories, namely, motor vehicle dealers or distributors, motor vehicle repairers, or motor vehicle manufacturers.
JPJ Sarawak assured that complete applications would be processed within seven working days of submission.
Additionally, the department plans to hold engagement sessions with businesses in the near future to streamline application procedures and minimise future delays.
