OYA: Pasar Sabtu Oya (PSO) is known for a delicacy made from sea produce – the umai (raw fish in a mix of chillies, onions, salt and lime juice).

Several parties, especially fishermen, here have begun to introduce the delicacy as another attraction to visitors stopping by PSO.

“PSO sells umai that is guaranteed to be clean and halal,” said the town committee chairman Arini Suhaili.

The market is open every Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors at PSO are attracted to the umai which they can sample there too.

Arini, who is also a councillor of Majlis Daerah Dalat Dan Mukah (MDDM), told Suara Sarawak and New Sarawak Tribune that he is PSO’s umai ‘ambassador’.

He said among the active and productive umai sellers at PSO are Jamal Dollah, Isa Jamil and Cek Jamil.

“To those who enjoy traditional Melanau cuisine such as umai, to savour the tastiness of PSO umai, visit PSO. Every day, we sell umai and fresh fish here.

Umai producers here prepare it from fish freshly caught from the sea such as ikan pirang, semperit, bilis matak and puput.

Other than preparing ready-processed umai, these sellers also prepare the sambal (chilli sauce) to go with it,” remarked Arini.

To fans of umai, a container of the product can be obtained at RM10, and the sambal costs between RM3 and RM5.
