SIBU: Assurance has been given that ways and means would be found to help fire victims at Rumah Julau, a longhouse in Ulu Pasai Siong near here.

Selangau MP Baru Bian, who is also Works Minister, made this clear while on the way to his constituency on Sunday evening for a pre-Christmas gathering.

He had also gone to the scene of the fire and donated RM12,000 to the victims.

“I will try my best to find ways to help the victims,” he said.

In the 10.45am fire on Saturday, 10 of the 12-door longhouse were destroyed leaving about 70 people homeless.

State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in a statement said a distress call about the fire was received at 10.52am and 16 firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene.

It stated that by the time the firemen arrived, 10 of the 12 doors were already burnt.

“We could only save the remaining two doors of the longhouse,” it said.
