KUCHING: Community activities organised by the Sarawak Consumer Welfare Association (SCWA) and the Malaysian Consumer Foundation (YPNM) Sarawak branch are benefiting the underprivileged community, particularly in the Taman Sentosa area.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said such efforts not only assist government agencies in enhancing road safety awareness during festive seasons but also extend aid to the needy.
“They (both organisations) approached me earlier, requesting allocations to carry out welfare activities,” he said during the Chinese New Year Road Safety Campaign at the Shell petrol station, Batu 4 1/2, on Saturday (Jan 18).
“They are very enthusiastic about contributing to the community and sought my assistance to help and give back to the people.
“Programmes like this, especially road safety campaigns, significantly support the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Road Transport Department (RTD) in promoting road safety. Additionally, providing food aid to the hardcore poor exemplifies meaningful community contributions.”
Yap said that such initiatives effectively help government agencies promote targeted awareness objectives.
“For example, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) focuses on easing the burden of the people.
“We can see the connection between their programmes, such as special sales to alleviate the cost of living and food aid for the hardcore poor, aimed at raising awareness,” he said.
On the campaign, Yap revealed that 700 vouchers were distributed across three selected petrol stations in the Kota Sentosa area.
An additional 700 vouchers will be distributed next week at a selected Petronas station in Kota Sentosa.
The vouchers, worth RM5 each, are provided to B40 motorcycle riders, along with free reflective warning stickers and road safety campaign brochures.
SCWA president Melson Chai expressed gratitude to all partners and sponsors for their unwavering support.
“This programme underscores our steadfast dedication to the welfare and well-being of the Sarawak community.
“We are thankful to the Kota Sentosa Service Centre, KPDN, PDRM, RTD, three Shell stations, and all contributors who played key roles in making this initiative a success.
“Together, we have made a meaningful difference, and we look forward to launching more programmes that enhance and support our community,” he said.
Chai said the RM5 Free Petrol Voucher initiative is a targeted effort to alleviate the financial burden on B40 motorcycle riders amid rising living costs.
“This initiative is not just practical assistance for daily travel – it reflects SCWA’s commitment, alongside our partners, to stand with the most affected members of the community and provide meaningful and impactful support,” he added.
