KUCHING: The Rose Bag Weaving course, organised by the Sarawak Kayan Women Association, aims to empower women by enhancing their families’ economic wellbeing.
Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau said the importance of such initiatives lies in inspiring and equipping women with the skills necessary to create additional income opportunities for themselves and their families.
“Women possess incredible talents and abilities that can positively impact their families and communities.
“By embracing crafts such as bag weaving, they can tap into their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to create sustainable income sources. Yes, you may not become a millionaire in a few years by hand-weaving, but you can create more opportunities from it,” he said.
The course, held at Telang Usan Hotel recently, was facilitated by Carol Usun Jok provided a platform women to develop their talents and refine their abilities in this traditional contemporary craft, provides a platform for women to develop their talents and refine their abilities in this traditional-contemporary craft.
Participants of around 30 women not only learn the art of bag weaving but also gain valuable insights into marketing their products and establishing successful small businesses.
“We must break free from the old ways and foster a strong sense of community within our minority group. Together, we can achieve great heights. Opportunities often arise during international conferences or exhibitions that seek local products to showcase. This is where you can work as a team to produce the items and expand your network,” he said.
He added that the skills acquired by participants would not only improve their economic prospects but also preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak.
