SRI AMAN: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) assured its Women’s wing members that their role in the party and as voters is appreciated.

Party Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan said women represented almost 50 percent of voters in the Balai Ringin constituency.

“Their numbers (49 percent) are almost equivalent to the men voters at (51 percent). That reflects they are much to be reckoned with.

“That’s not all. They are loyal and remain as our staunch supporters,” he said, when officiating at the closing of the ‘Berandau’ session with almost 500 participants in attendance at Dewan Sri Pantu near Simanggang, here on Wednesday (Aug 19).

The Balai Ringin assemblyman said the session had deliberated on women’s participation in economic activities such businesses, trades in cottage industry, education, health, politics and social issues.

To create greater impact on the leadership front, Snowdan said that in his constituency, no fewer than 10 women have been  chosen by their ‘anembiaks’ as Tuai Rumah.

Touching on development in his constituency, Snowdan, who is Assistant Youth and Sports Minister, said it is not only a great challenge but unique because Balai Ringin sits on three administrative centres – Serian, Simunjan and Sri Aman.

“To ease administration, he said Balai Ringin into zones – education sector with technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the pipeline, and as a sports talent sector catering for one secondary school and 19 primary schools.

“A new RM10 million sport complex has been approved by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and is to be built there soon to compliment Balai Ringin’s status as a new sub district,” he said.

Snowdan also said Simunjan will concentrate as an eco-tourism sector with an initial grant of RM300,000 under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) to develop basic infrastructure for Danau Perupuk as an eco-tourism and cottage industry.

Meanwhile, Pantu will be an agriculture and plantation sector catering for future food basket in view of the vast land bank and access along with soil fertility for fruits, paddy and commercial crops.
