KUCHING: All companies or contractors providing water and electricity supplies are allowed to work during the movement control order (MCO) period.

This is the latest directive issued by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) on the services that can resume operations.

SDMC deputy chairman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said these are considered as essential services.

“The police and army will not stop these contractors in performing their duties,” he said on the daily update on Covid-19 in a press conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

He also said the state government will decide on which business sectors can operate during the MCO period.

“We are aware of the latest directives form the federal government on some businesses that are allowed to open during this period.

“However, Sarawak will study the ones listed and make decisions based on the needs of the state,” he said.

He said the state does not need to follow the federal government’s decision 100 per cent.

“On the reopening of barber shops, I personally think it should not be open first. We will come up with a decision on that soon,” he said.

It was announced by the federal government that some sectors including barbershops are allowed to operate under MCO.
