KUCHING:
The highly anticipated What About Kuching (WAK) Festival will again include venues outside the state capital this year.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah got the ball rolling with a call for proposals here Tuesday.

“This year, the WAK Festival will be bringing its community-driven spirit to Sibu (June 6 – 8) and Miri ( June 13 – 15).

“In Kuching, the festival will be held throughout October,” he said, inviting creatives, artists and culture buffs to submit concepts for the event.

Abdul Karim called on everyone to be part of this community-driven, multi-genre festival which is now in its seventh edition.

Carrying the theme ‘Roots’, this year’s festival aims to celebrate cultural heritage.

“With a fabulous mix of over 30 different vibrant races, each with unique and colourful cultural practices, Sarawak is the best platform to showcase cultural diversity and the WAK Festival platform exemplifies this”, he said.

Artists, organisations, enthusiasts, and anyone interested may submit their proposals through the official WAK Festival website at www.aboutkuching.com.

The submissions must be made by May 8 for Sibu and Miri, and June 27 for Kuching.

Festival director Donald Tan said its success is a testament to the unwavering support of everyone directly or indirectly involved, describing the festival as being more than just an event.

“Each year, new stories emerge, new talents are discovered, and new friendships are forged”, he said.
