KUCHING: A local opposition politician thinks the low voter turnout in last December’s state election could be due to the fact that people were tired of seeing politicians party-hopping or abandoning their parties.

Parti Bumi Kenyalang president Voon Lee Shan Voon claimed voters had lost interest and felt misled by the country’s democratic system.

Commenting on Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How’s recent decision to leave Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), Lee said See should be gentlemanly enough to vacate his seat as “the voters supported the party (PSB) and not See in his personal capacity”.

“Chee How should keep the promises he made to PSB to vacate the seat if he decided to leave the party which he won on a PSB ticket, and compensate the party.

“Voters in Batu Lintang whom I met said that he gave a flimsy excuse for leaving PSB – wanting to stay away from party politics – which is not acceptable to them,” he said.

Voon said he doubted See’s ability to serve his constituents effectively as an independent.

“By hopping out (of PSB) or resigning, is YB Chee How encouraging party-hopping?” he asked.
