A NEW permanent Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (CIQS) complex in Telok Melano is pertinent for a more regulated border movement between Sarawak and Kalimantan-Indonesia.
With the completion of the Sematan-Telok Melano highway, Azizul Annuar Adenan (GPS-Tanjong Datu) pointed out that opportunities were ripe for border intrusion both by land and sea, especially through the Tanjong Datu National Park.
As such, he said border patrols must also be strengthened and enhanced to reciprocate the numbers provided by the state’s neighbour in addition to the CIQS.
“Border security, especially along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border of my constituency, is a matter that has been raised several times by my predecessor.
“While it seemed that not much has been accomplished, nevertheless I must thank the state government for the completed construction of the temporary Telok Melano border control post which is now in full use.
“However, I must emphasise on the word ‘temporary’ as I definitely do not want the Border Control Post to be permanently temporary.”
Azizul urged the relevant authority to take the matter seriously as it entailed the security of the country.
“To date, we have been lucky that during lockdown there were not much interborder movement happening. Now that the borders are opened, we need to be vigilant and beef up our security.”
