KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is elated to announce its participation in the Virtual Earth Hour 2025.
It will be held in conjunction with the International Earth Hour event this coming Saturday (March 22) at 8.30 pm.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said MBKS will join alongside Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS), Padawan Municipal Council (PMC), Miri City Council, Sibu Municipal Council, Bintulu Development Authority, and Sibu Rural District Council.
“This year, the Sibu Rural District Council will host the event under the theme ‘Create the Biggest Hour for Earth’.
“This is the fourth year of this initiative in our region, following previous years’ hosts, which include the Sibu Municipal Council (2022), MBKS (2023) and Miri City Council (2024).
“Our collaboration continues to show our commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and inspiring the public to engage in eco-friendly practices,” he said.
He said this at a press conference for the upcoming event at MBKS building here today.
Wee also announced that MBKS will switch off the lights at the council’s offices, parks and other facilities for one hour to show its solidarity and commitment to the global movement.
“In addition, we are pleased to announce that several private-sector entities, including hotels and shopping malls under MBKS jurisdiction, will also join this effort.
“Namely MBKS City Hall and Boulevard, community hall, Song Kheng Hai Hawker Ground Food Centre, Stutong Community Market, Saradise, Kuching Park Hotel and Imperial Hotel, Vivacity Megamall, Aeroville Mall, Aeon Mall and Farley Mall, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, i-Cats University College, Boulevard Mall, Taman Kuching, and Ibraco Bhd are among participants that will join the Virtual Earth Hour 2025,” he added.
He also urged the public to actively participate in the movement, whether by switching off the lights at home, joining the event online or spreading the word.
“Every small action can have a significant impact on the global effort to address climate change and protect nature,” he added.
The Virtual Earth Hour will be held at Sibu Jaya Public Library, and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian is expected to officiate the event.
