KUCHING: A book about the journey and experiences of veteran journalist Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya is set to be published by February 2025 at the latest.
Chamil, who is the former Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), said the book is currently in its final stages of preparation.
“The book, titled ‘Warna-Warna Kehidupan (Colors of Life)’, will tell the story of a journalist’s journey in carrying out their duties as a reporter,” he said when met at Sarawak Tribune office here yesterday (Nov 14).
“In addition to sharing experiences in the field of journalism, I will also include insights into notable figures I had the opportunity to interview throughout my career,” he added.
He also mentioned that there have been suggestions to change the book’s title to “Rona-Rona Kehidupan (Shades of Life)”, and that this will be reviewed.
“This is because the book has received funding from the government and is subject to their approval. If they agree, we will change the title,” he explained.
In this work, he recounts his journey from Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Kuala Lumpur, to London, before returning to Malaysia.
Starting as a reporter at Utusan Malaysia, he later established a weekly newspaper called Suara Rakyat, before expanding his career to London, where he worked with BBC News for about six years. He then returned to Malaysia to serve at TV3 and Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).
The book will capture behind-the-scenes stories from his time as a journalist, spanning from the mid-1970s until his mandatory retirement in 2007 at the age of 55.
