SIBU: University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is hoping to have 4,000 students in campus by the end of 2024.
According to UTS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, with the help of the state government as well as collaboration with various companies, he is positive they will be able to achieve the target.
He said after 10 years in operation,the university has progressed steadily and currently has nearly 3,000 students.
“We started with only four academic programmes in 2013 and today we are offering 34 academic programmes from foundation, bachelor’s, masters’ until PhD.
“We started with only 76 staff, but now have 335, with 55 per cent of them being academic staff of whim about 32 per cent hold PhDs and professional qualifications,” he said at the first session that was held on Saturday (August 5).
Dr Khairuddin said UTS is preparing to introduce new programmes next year, including Occupational Safety and Health, Marine Engineering Technology, Nautical Science Studies and Law.
“As a young university, we are proud to be able to establish and collaborate with many prominent international university partners from United Kingdom, United States of America, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, Sweden, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand and Namibia.
“At this juncture, I would like to thank the state government for the continuous support, especially on the new phase of campus development in UTS, especially the completion of this Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“This is no doubt the best present for UTS as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary,” he said.
