KUCHING: The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) is encouraging local fishermen to adopt modern technology to increase their income.

Its chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil cited aquaculture as an example where modern technology has helped those in the industry to increase their yield and income.

“Aquaculture projects can be successfully implemented in smaller areas to generate more income for our local fishermen,” he said when visiting the Satang Biru Fisherman Association (PNK) prawn farm in Satang Biru, Telaga Air here yesterday.
The farm covering 165 hectares was developed by LKIM and handed over to PNK since the 90s.

Faiz explained that the farm was meant to encourage members of the association to engage in the aquaculture industry.
“We want to see members of local fishermen associations involved in the aquaculture industry and in modernising the market,” he said.

During the visit, Faiz officiated at the Collection and Distribution Centre for fish and prawn (CCDC) in the area.
“With this one-stop centre, fishermen can sell their catch directly to traders without involving the middlemen, hence lowering the price of the commodity in the market,” he said.
