SELANGAU: Residents here have been encouraged to make use of idle land for agricultural activities, such as coffee cultivation, to help boost their household income.

Local MP Edwin Banta reaffirmed his commitment to enhance the socio-economic development of the community by distributing 33,600 Liberica coffee seedlings to approximately 200 recipients in the area.

“This initiative aims to provide a sustainable income source for the local community by supporting coffee cultivation,” he said during a community gathering at Rumah Bunya Jimbat, Sekuau here on Sunday (Jan 5).

During the event, Edwin also took the opportunity to inform those present about various government policies and the assistance available to the community, including federal and state government programmes.

In addition, he said there is special aid available to Selangau students pursuing higher education at public universities, as well as welfare assistance provided to families in the event of a death.

Later that afternoon, he visited Kampung Iban Islam Sekuau, where he listened to the community’s concerns.

He responded swiftly by approving a request for a water tank, as the village had not yet received a clean water supply.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Edwin visited the site of the new longhouse at Rumah Samuli Anak Chandi in Sungai Tau, Selangau, where he met with residents and engaged in friendly discussions.

That evening, he attended a casual gathering at Rumah John Antieng in Pasai Siong to celebrate Christmas and the upcoming New Year 2025 with the local community.
