BINTULU: A total of 50 cats and 40 dogs received free Anti-Rabies vaccinations in a programme organised by Diploma in Animal Health and Veterinary Technology (DKHP) students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus, recently.
The programme, themed “One Health: Preventing Rabies, Protecting Lives,” held at the UPMKB Veterinary Clinic, was conducted in collaboration with the Bintulu Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), Street Animal Rescue Association (SARA) Bintulu, and the One Health Club of UPM Serdang.
The programme aimed to raise public awareness about the dangers of rabies and the importance of prevention.
According to the director of the Sarawak State Health Department, Dr. Veronica Lugah, since the rabies outbreak was declared in July 2017, Sarawak has recorded 82 human rabies cases with 75 fatalities.
Seven new cases were reported in 2024, all resulting in death. Therefore, this vaccination programme was conducted to reduce the risk of transmission of this deadly disease.
The programme also included various awareness activities such as free deworming for dogs and cats, exhibitions, game booths, a poster colouring competition, and face painting activities. More than 350 residents here participated in these activities.
Programme director, Tang Chai Wen, emphasised that Anti-Rabies vaccination is an effective and cost-efficient way to protect humans from rabies.
He stated that controlling rabies in dog and cat populations is key to preventing its transmission to humans.
“This programme not only brings a positive impact to pet owners but also hones the students’ skills in communication and community programme management,” he added.
