KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed hope that harmony and unity in the state will continue, emphasising the importance of mutual respect and understanding among Sarawakians of all backgrounds.
In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025 message, Abang Johari highlighted Sarawak’s strength in its diversity, noting that the state is renowned for the peaceful coexistence between the various ethnic and religious communities.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government to safeguarding the interests of Islam while ensuring that other religions are also given due attention through the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR).
“The development and progress of Islam are emphasised based on the principles of maqasid syariah, which uphold all that is good and reject all that is harmful.
“Many beautiful mosques have been built across Sarawak to provide comfort for Muslims in their worship.
“Places of worship for other religions are also given due attention through UNIFOR, as all faiths deserve a comfortable space to fulfill their religious obligation,” he said.
The Premier also reminded Sarawakians not to take their peaceful and harmonious way of life for granted, stressing that it requires continuous effort from all communities to uphold tolerance and mutual respect.
“The people of Sarawak, despite their diverse backgrounds, have understood the meaning of mutual respect and have always avoided issues that could threaten the unity that has long been established.
“I sincerely hope that we will always strive to foster understanding among fellow Muslims as well as between Muslims and other communities in Sarawak.
“We must avoid getting involved in disputes over religion, race and trivial issues, as often happens elsewhere.
“Even if differences of opinion arise on certain matters, we must resolve them in a manner that does not harm the unity that we have long built together,” he stressed.
Abang Johari with his wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang also wished ‘Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri’ to all Muslims in Sarawak and across the nation, hoping that the festive season would be filled with joy, reflection, and strengthened bonds among families and communities.
“Puan Sri and I will be hosting an open house on the first and second day of Hari Raya at the Borneo Convention Centre (BCCK) in Kuching, starting from 10 am.
“We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating this joyous occasion together,” he said.
