SIBU: Plans are underway to upgrade the Sungai Merah Heritage Walk, says Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.
He noted the importance of enhancing the site to accommodate more activities and programmes.
“This is the Seduan River, also known as the Red River. It is actually a beautiful river that we have. In Sibu, you won’t find another place that can match this heritage walk.
“So, I have some plans in mind. I’m still studying how I can transform this place into something even better so that more people will visit,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters at the Red River Festival, organised by Persatuan Perpaduan Sungai Merah Sibu at Sungai Merah Heritage Walk here, last night (Mar 29).

The Pelawan assemblyman added that during his walkabout at the event, he observed several infrastructure issues that need upgrading to ensure the venue is suitable for future programmes.
“We still need some work—some infrastructure upgrades and repair work—just to ensure that visitors are safe when using this place.
“This is also important for entrepreneurs doing business here, ensuring they have a safe environment,” he added.
Tiang also said he welcomes public suggestions for enhancements, believing the site has great potential.
“With the right improvements, this can become one of the most exciting and attractive destinations in Sibu.
“In the future, when people think about where to dine or explore in Sibu, Sungai Merah, the Red River Heritage Walk, will come to mind. There is much to look forward to,” he said.
