MIRI: Police on Tuesday morning detained an 18 year-old local man for engaging in unlicensed moneylending business here.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said the suspect was detained at a restaurant at Jalan Kwang Tung here where he was allegedly distributing printed leaflets to promote an illegal money lending business.

The suspect was detained at around 10.30am by police personnel from Miri Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

“He was detained for allegedly carrying out the moneylending business without a valid licence,” Hakemal said.

More than 200 printed leaflets were found inside his sling bag.

The case is being investigated under Section 29AA of the Moneylenders Act 1951.
