According to the Premier, the next decade is going to be crucial for Sarawak. As the world gears up to fight climate change and embrace sustainability, Sarawak has a chance to jump on this bandwagon and make some serious economic gains. Premier Abang Johari believes that by looking beyond our borders and considering the global perspective, we can unlock the potential that lies within our beautiful state.
Now, here’s the exciting part. There’s this important climate change conference called the Conference of Parties (COP) happening in Dubai in 2028. This conference is a clear sign that Sarawak is on the right track when it comes to seizing opportunities in tough times and expanding our economy.
We’re moving towards clean energy, my friends, and Sarawak can play a major role in that transition. We’re talking about developing hydrogen for export by 2027, becoming a hub for carbon trading by preserving our forests as carbon sinks, and making the most of our oil and gas resources by producing methanol and ammonia. These moves will not only help us generate more revenue but also contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
But wait, there’s more! Premier Abang Johari believes that if we can increase our income from the usual RM5 billion to RM12 billion by 2022, there’s no reason why we can’t double our GDP to RM282 billion by 2030.
He drew inspiration from President Kennedy, who set the audacious goal of putting a man on the moon, and cited the success stories of China and Japan. Our Premier firmly believes that if we all work together – the government, civil service, and political leaders – and implement the Post-COVID Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and the Sarawak Digital Blueprint, we can achieve this target. Teamwork makes the dream work, right?
Now, let’s talk about what this means for us, everyday folks. With our economy growing, we can expect to see some positive changes in our lives. The Premier aims to triple the median household income from RM5,000 to RM15,000 by 2030. That’s a significant leap, my friends, and it means we can bridge the income gap between Sarawak and the national average. We all deserve a fair share of the economic progress happening around us, and our government is committed to making that happen.
As we move forward, investing in infrastructure becomes crucial. We need better seaports and other essential facilities to create an environment where our service and agricultural sectors can thrive. These investments will not only attract investors but also improve our quality of life. We want to build a better Sarawak for ourselves and future generations.
Speaking of future generations, our Premier recognises the importance of planning ahead. He wants us to save part of our revenue for the benefit of future generations through the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Funds (SWFF). Starting with an initial capital of RM8 billion, this fund will help secure our economic prosperity for years to come. It’s all about being smart with our resources and ensuring a bright future for Sarawakians.
During the HPT Retreat, the Premier witnessed the signing of agreements that highlight our commitment to progress. Sarawak Foundation and Sunway Integrated Property are teaming up to develop a modern digital medical village in Samariang, Kuching, which means better healthcare for us.
Additionally, the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) and Sunway Integrated Property will be working together to transform the water-logged area in Sibu into a thriving township. These projects show that we’re serious about revitalizing our urban spaces and creating vibrant communities.
To sum up all of the above, folks, Sarawak has massive potential for economic growth. By seizing opportunities in the global shift towards clean energy and sustainability, investing in infrastructure, bridging income gaps, and planning for the future, we can create a better Sarawak for ourselves and future generations.
