UNIMAS students host seminar on media literacy

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Final-year students of the Strategic Communication programme from the Faculty of Education, Language, and Communication at University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) recently organised a seminar titled “Media Literacy in News Consumption on Social Media.”

The seminar aimed to equip participants with essential skills to critically evaluate news content circulating on social media platforms.

The event was entirely planned and executed by the final-year students,who were eager to showcase their dedication and commitment to raising awareness about media literacy.

Their efforts included inviting esteemed panellists, ensuring smooth execution, and fostering dynamic discussions.

The event featured two esteemed panellists, including Sarawak Tribune Special Editor Nazmi Suhaimi, and Rizzo Mungka Rechie, a digital literacy expert and Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association (SDGA) Deputy Secretary General.

The speakers addressed the audience on the importance of recognising misinformation, understanding biases, and fostering responsible media consumption habits.

Nazmi spoke on the role of journalists in ensuring credibility and accuracy in reporting.

He also shared insights into the challenges of combating fake news in today’s fast-paced digital environment.

Complementing this perspective, Rizzo pointed out the need for digital literacy, outlining practical tools and techniques to verify sources and identify manipulated content.

The seminar was sponsored by the Sarawak Dayak Graduates Association, which played a crucial role in its success and in providing visibility.

The event was attended by students, lecturers, and members of the general public who engaged in lively discussions both online and physically during the question and answer (Q&A) sessions.
