KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has recorded a total of 651 intellectual properties registered, encompassing copyrights, patents and utility innovations, with the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MYIPO) as of today (Dec 9).

Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit stated that efforts to drastically increase the number of intellectual property registrations will be implemented next year (2025) to ensure a significant rise in numbers.

“To date, 651 intellectual properties have been registered with MYIPO, and we hope this number will grow significantly with our collaborative efforts in 2025.

“Imagine the potential, including theses from our students—not just 600, but 60,000 outputs could be achieved by Unimas.

“We will do our utmost to ensure Unimas gains recognition not only in Sarawak but also internationally,” he said.

He said this during his speech at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) Programme at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman (DeTAR) Putra, Unimas today.

The ceremony saw Prof Ahmad Hata and MYIPO director-general Kamal Kormin representing their respective institutions to formalise the MoU between Unimas and MYIPO.

Commenting on the MoU, Prof Ahmad Hata expressed hope that it would inspire individuals to create innovations that benefit society and the nation.

In addition, he emphasized that the initiative aligns with Unimas’ goals to expand its reputation globally.

In the same development, Prof Ahmad Hata revealed that Unimas successfully commercialised 69 high-value intellectual property-based research projects, amounting to RM16.14 million.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Unimas highlighted that the MoU aims to expand networks to centers providing support and services for creators, researchers, and entrepreneurs.

The statement explained that TISC operates under the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) programme and is designed to raise awareness, understanding, and usage of the intellectual property system among global users.

“With support from TISC, Unimas inventors will have easier access to information about international markets and intellectual property regulations abroad.
