KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has produced 63,311 alumni from 60 countries as of December 2024, and has achieved a graduate employability rate of 90.8 per cent in 2023, which surpasses the national average.
Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit attributed this success to the implementation of various strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing graduate employability.
“Through the Student Development Centre (PPP), the university conducts programmes such as curriculum vitae editing workshops, interview training and industrial training programmes.
“The PPP also organises career forums and talks involving industry representatives to guide graduates,” he told Sarawak Tribune yesterday (Dec 26).
Prof Dr Ahmad Hata also highlighted the annual Talent Recruitment and Career Exhibition (TRACE) as a key contributor to employability outcomes.
He noted that the TRACE programme held from June 26 to 27 this year resulted in 139 job openings and 65 internship opportunities.
In addition, the university has introduced the Student Start-Ups Program, which fosters student innovation by enabling them to develop and manage real business ventures on campus.
“This initiative not only equips students with entrepreneurial experience but also empowers them to create job opportunities for the local community.”
Unimas has also launched the Graduate Professional Programme (GPP) to prepare students holistically for the workforce by focusing on physical, mental and spiritual readiness.
Furthermore, the university’s participation in the Graduate Employability Management Scheme (GEMS-SSO), in collaboration with TalentCorp and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), offers graduates valuable industrial training opportunities.
Meanwhile, the Graduate Professional Programme, conducted in June 2024, facilitated direct engagement between final-year students and industry representatives.
He added that the strategic partnerships have further strengthened Unimas’ employability efforts, such as collaborations with the Social Welfare Organisation (Socso) which resulted in initiatives such as the MyFuture Job Interview Programme held in partnership with Socso Sarawak.
Additionally, funding from the KPT PACE Fund, combined with partnerships with organisations like Khazanah Nasional, has provided students with further opportunities.
The K-Youth Industry Ready Development Programme 2024, conducted in collaboration with Khazanah Nasional and Talent Suites, equips final-year students with industry-ready skills through specialised modules.
