KUCHING: A total of 108 underprivileged families received Hari Raya Aidilfitri donations from the Sarawak Hun Nam Siang Tng Association today.
Each family was given a duit raya envelope worth RM50, along with essential food provisions such as beef, chicken, eggs, potatoes, and other groceries to ensure they can celebrate Hari Raya with joy.
“Today’s programme is a reflection of Sarawak’s beauty, where NGOs (non-governmental organisations), regardless of their leadership background, provide aid to anyone in need—be it Malay, Chinese, or Iban,” said Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah at the event, here today (Mar 29).
“This is the unity we must continue to uphold and protect,” she added.
She commended association for its decades-long commitment to charitable work, dating back to 1956, and noted that their contributions go beyond food assistance, also helping families who cannot afford funeral arrangements for their loved ones.
“This is a remarkable initiative. They have been consistently providing aid, including monthly food provisions for 415 recipients,” she said.
Fatimah also acknowledged the broader ecosystem of support in Sarawak, where government programmes, corporate sponsors, and elected representatives work hand in hand with NGOs to uplift the less fortunate.
She cited the state’s Sejambak Kasih programme, which provides additional aid to welfare recipients during major festive seasons, ensuring that those celebrating Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, or Gawai receive extra financial support.
“Here in Sarawak, kindness knows no boundaries. We see NGOs, corporate entities, and even non-Muslim leaders stepping forward to support the underprivileged, regardless of their race or religion,” she added.
