KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has urged the public to steer clear of sensitive issues like religious extremism and racism to preserve harmony in Sarawak.
In his 2025 Hari Raya Aidilfitri message, Uggah emphasised the importance of strengthening the spirit of brotherhood, tolerance and unity among Sarawakians of diverse backgrounds.
“On this blessed day, let us stay away from these sensitive issues which could threaten our harmony and unity among Sarawakians and Malaysians of all races,” he said.
He also highlighted the Sarawak government’s commitment to infrastructure development under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“We in Sarawak are truly fortunate that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government, under the leadership of Abang Johari, remains committed to the welfare of the people, particularly in ensuring high-quality road infrastructure development.
“A well-connected road network not only facilitates movement between urban and rural areas, but also stimulates rural development.
“These projects bring significant benefits to the people, especially during festive seasons when returning to hometowns becomes easier, more comfortable and cost-effective,” he said.
He said that in alignment with Abang Johari’s vision, the Infrastructure and Port Development Ministry, in partnership with the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak, is actively expanding key road networks, including the Sarawak Coastal Road and the Second Trunk Road.
“The Sarawak Coastal Road, spanning 896 kilometres (km), connects Kota Samarahan to Miri, while the Second Trunk Road, covering 225km, starts from Batang Samarahan Bridge to Roban Interchange, before linking to the Pan Borneo Highway.
“These two projects require an investment of RM11 billion, including RM5.9 billion allocated for the construction of 16 bridges.
“This funding is fully financed by Sarawak itself, reflecting the state’s capability to independently develop its infrastructure,” Uggah said.
He also mentioned that at present, the Sarawak Coastal Road is 78 per cent complete, while the Second Trunk Road has reached over 30 per cent progress.
“The Sarawak Coastal Road is expected to be fully completed by 2027, and the Second Trunk Road by 2028,” he said.
He said that by the end of this year, 11 bridges will be opened, followed by four more bridges next year.
“This proves GPS’ commitment to improving connectivity between urban and rural Sarawak, ensuring that the people’s comfort remains a top priority.
“Give your full support to the GPS government and the leadership of Abang Johari, so that development agendas can continue to be implemented smoothly and effectively.
“May this celebration bring blessings, good health and happiness to us all. Salam Aidilfitri,” said Uggah.
