KUCHING: Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife oh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi will grace the 100-Year Anniversary Peace Making Celebration Kapit 1924–2024 next month.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the event will take place at Dataran Bandar Kapit from Dec 5 to 8, featuring various programmes and activities for an anticipated crowd of 500 people.
A key highlight of the celebration will be a seminar featuring prominent anthropologists presenting research papers on the historical peace agreement.
“We expect around 500 community leaders from the Dayak community in Sarawak and representatives from Kalimantan, Indonesia, as the original peace agreement also involved Dayak communities from both Sarawak and Kalimantan,” Nanta said after a courtesy call at the Astana Negeri Sarawak, Monday (Nov 18).
The Kapit MP also revealed that Wan Junaidi and his wife will attend the closing ceremony on Dec 8.
“There will also be a regatta with boat races as part of the festivities. This will mark Wan Junaidi’s first official visit to Kapit since his appointment as Sarawak Governor.”
In a Facebook post, Nanta noted the historical significance of the event, recalling the 1924 peace agreement signed on Nov 16, which ended conflicts between the Iban and Orang Ulu communities (including the Kayan, Kenyah and Kajang ethnic groups).
Also present were organising chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Leonard Linggi Jugah, with support from Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Liwan Lagang; Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat; and several assemblymen, including Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugan, Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan and Baleh assemblyman Nicholas Kudi Jantai.
Kapit Division Resident Galong Luang and Belaga District Officer Bidah Lujah were also present.
