MUKAH: A fire broke out at a single-storey wooden house in Ladang 1 SPB Mukah 1, Jalan Selangau-Mukah, on Friday night, reducing two motorcycles and a car to ashes.

Mukah District Police chief, Deputy Superintendent Muhamad Rizal Alias, reported that the incident occurred at around 7.30 pm.

According to him, an occupant of the neighbouring house first noticed something was amiss when their dog began barking loudly. Curious, the neighbours looked out of the window and were alarmed to see flames rapidly consuming the kitchen of the adjacent house.

“The resident immediately tried to retrieve the car parked underneath the burning house, but the fire had already spread too quickly, making it impossible to save the vehicle,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

Realising the danger, the resident alerted neighbours and quickly dialled 999 to report the incident and provide the location details.

Firefighters from the Selangau Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the scene within 20 minutes, despite the location being about 30 kilometres from the Selangau market. They managed to bring the blaze under control by 8.40 pm.

“The fire destroyed all vehicle documents, while the extent of damage to other belongings is still being assessed,” Rizal added.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, and investigations are being carried out by the Forensic Unit of the Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue Department.

Meanwhile, the affected victims will take temporary shelter in the neighbouring house. The estimated losses from the incident have yet to be confirmed.
