KUCHING: Sarawak’s very own television station, TVS, has made a mark in the national broadcasting landscape, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said TVS has carved a niche for itself not only by promoting Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage, but also by establishing a strong presence beyond the state.
“In just five years, TVS has succeeded.
“I was informed that one of its songs was performed at the open house held at the Istana in Brunei Darussalam, which reflects the public’s acceptance of performances by our very own TVS talents,” he said during the TVS’ Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri 2025 event at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today (Apr 8).

Abang Johari noted that the idea behind setting up TVS stemmed from the state government’s intention to provide a platform for Sarawakians, particularly those in the creative industry, to showcase their talents.
This, he asserted, was a strategic move by the Sarawak government.
“Many of our children are taking up courses in mass communication, and of course, we need an outlet for them to express and introduce their creativity.
“Thus, five years ago, my colleagues and I decided to apply for a license from the federal government to establish Sarawak’s own broadcasting station.
“Today, we are proud that Sarawak is the only region in Malaysia to have its own TV station,” he added.
Apart from producing content that resonates with local audiences, TVS has also expanded its footprint across Malaysia, including offices in the Peninsula.
Abang Johari added that TVS has successfully extended its news coverage beyond Sarawak to include national affairs, allowing viewers across the country and abroad to stay connected with developments in the state.
“Not bad at all — the reception from West Malaysia has also been encouraging,” he said.
Earlier, TVS acting chief executive officer (CEO) Mohamad Sardon Zainal expressed the station’s commitment to strengthening teamwork in order to advance TVS as a leading media platform, particularly in Sarawak and also at the national level.
“As one big family at TVS, we remain committed to delivering quality content for Malaysia’s diverse society, upholding Sarawak’s cultural values and strengthening the local broadcasting industry,” he said.
