KUCHING: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is emerging as a ‘game changer’ in the education system as it will eventually revolutionise the workforce for the digital age.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that TVET plays a crucial role in supporting the development of the digital economy.

“TVET provides a skilled and competent workforce in fields such as information technology, data science and other related areas.

“TVET should be a priority for youth pursuing further education due to its high employability rate of over 90 per cent and strong industry demand,” he said.

His speech was read by Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Sri Roland Sagah at the Sarawak Zone Politeknik and Kolej Komuniti convocation here on Saturday (Sept 7).

“I am confident that Polytechnics and Community Colleges, also known as POLYCC, are capable of helping the country enhance human capital towards Industry 4.0, meeting the needs or sources of human resources in the development of the digital economy in this region,” Abang Johari said.

He said that the results are evident as statistics from the Ministry of Higher Education reveal that the employability rate of POLYCC graduates reached a historic high of over 97 per cent in 2023.

“Close collaboration between POLYCC, industry, and the Sarawak government is a crucial element in enhancing the employability of TVET graduates in the Sarawak region. POLYCC plays a key role in providing future human capital.

“Therefore, I hope that the continued cooperation between POLYCC, industry, and the Sarawak government will be maintained to strengthen TVET, making it more dynamic and competitive in the future.

“I am confident that this collaboration will empower TVET and produce highly skilled and professional graduates,” he added.

A total of 1,989 graduates from the POLYCC Sarawak Zone were honoured during the ceremony.
