KUCHING: The third Annual Sarawak Tourism Short Video Contest is an excellent opportunity for filmmakers to showcase Sarawak, especially as the state gears up for the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Tourism) Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chew Yew said that through the video, visitors outside of Sarawak are able to get to know Sarawak in terms of the culture and tradition.
“You see, these videos all will be posted on social media, and this is where people would view it and they will be fascinated and interested towards Sarawak.
“From there, the visitors will come and see what Sarawak has in store for them.
“Therefore, this will definitely help to promote our state, and especially next year (VM2026),” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after the prize presentation to the winners of the third Annual Sarawak Tourism Short Video Contest at KGCG Innovation Hub, Wisma Chinese Chambers here today.
Ting added that between January to February of this year, more than 800,000 visitors have come to Sarawak, with more than RM1 billion in tourism receipts.
“With that being said, the high amount of visitors arrival is good for the hotel sectors, good for our economy and those involved in the transportation industry.
“At the same time, we expect more this year, and we have the confidence that we will surpass our initial five million visitors’ arrival, which is the target set by my ministry as well,” he added.
Speaking on the video contest, Ting stated that it is one of the ways for young and talented filmmakers to showcase their talent in filmmaking, while promoting Sarawak as well.
“I am very thankful to the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) for organising this contest.
“These filmmakers will go out and explore all things about Sarawak, and what they would like to showcase to the people outside of the state as well.
“I can assure, the videos that they see will definitely generate their interest in coming here to explore our food, culture and nature,” he added.
Eight talented filmmakers participated in the video contest, with five of them receiving consolation prizes, each bringing home RM1,000.
Alan Ting Judson emerged as the winner for the contest, with his short video title ‘Sarawak Chapter One’, to take home a cash prize worth RM10,000.
