SIBU: Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee has proposed allocating a quota of affordable housing units for personnel of the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station.
The move is a of appreciation for the dedication of firefighters.
“I’ve informally shared the idea of building affordable homes near this very site, with a specific quota set aside for Bomba members.
“They serve the community with unwavering dedication. We must support them in return, especially in helping them achieve homeownership. This is one way of looking after those who protect us,” he said.

Tiang made the announcement during a Hari Raya gathering at the Sungai Merah Fire Station last night (Apr 7), which was also attended by Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Jamri Masran and JBPM deputy director-general (Development) Othman Abdullah.
However, he noted that the housing proposal is still awaiting approval from the State Planning Authority (SPA) and has yet to be officially announced.
Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, reiterated his commitment to continue allocating RM200,000 annually for facility upgrades and maintenance at the Sungai Merah station.
Meanwhile, commenting on the festive gathering, Tiang praised the event for reflecting the spirit of unity that defines Sarawak.
“We’re enjoying dishes from every corner of Sarawak; delicacies from Limbang, Mukah, Kuching, and all that in one place,” he said.
“Events like this show the strength of Sarawak’s unity. We celebrate each other’s festivals, cultures, and traditions. That’s what makes Sarawak special. We thrive because we appreciate and respect our diversity.”
He added that Sarawak’s rapid development is rooted in its social harmony and political stability.
“Our people live in peace, our government is stable, and we treat one another with kindness. Just like the food we enjoy tonight, each dish has its own distinct flavour, but together, they create something wonderful. That is Sarawak.”
