SIBU: About three tonnes of e-wastes were collected on the first day of the e-waste recycling campaign held here from Friday until today.

The campaign, which was officiated by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman, Datuk Tiong Thai King yesterday, is held in conjunction with Sarawak ICT Expo and organised by Sarawak Computer Sales and Services Association, Sibu Branch.

Speaking to reporters after the launching of the campaign yesterday, organising chairman, Wong Ing Ang said they had already collected about three tonnes of e-waste on the first day of the campaign.

“Last year, we did not hold the campaign and because of that many people are coming here to discard their spoilt computers, printers and other electronic gadgets this year.

“These e-wastes will be sent to a local collector who will then send them to a dismantling factory in West Malaysia. We do not have such factory in Sarawak at the moment and so we have to send these e-wastes to the factory in West Malaysia,” he said.
