MANAGEMENT OF HAZE, BUSH FIRES

MIRI: Three task forces have been set up by Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC) with various government agencies to minimise and manage the impact of haze and bush fires here.

Minister in-charge of MDDMC Datuk Lee Kim Shin revealed the set up of three task forces to mitigate the issues during a meeting held yesterday.

“MDDMC would be the main coordinator of the task forces, which involved various government agencies,” said Lee.

He hoped with the setting up of the task force it could help stop peat forest fires and haze incidents which have been putting people in this division at great risk of suffering from air pollution and health problem for more than 10 years.

The task forces comprises of main control and preventive management functions which is led by the Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB); involvement with the community and landowners (led by Land and Survey Department) and dissemination of information under Unit Komunikasi Sarawak (Ukas).

“We urge the public to walk hand-in-hand with us to ensure that Miri is free from air pollution because of haze and bush and peat fires which have an impact on human health such as respiratory problems, causing cough, sore throats, watery eyes and asthma,” Lee pointed out.

Also present at the meeting was acting Miri Resident Abdul Azizi Mohd Yusuf who is also chairman of the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee.
