KUCHING: Three men were arrested for attacking two foreign workers at a restaurant in the city centre here last Wednesday (Sept 9).

The incident happened around 5.30am last Tuesday (Sept 8), when one of the suspects was barred from entering the premises after he refused to write down his exact personal details in a customer’s record book as required by the standard operating procedures (SOPs) under the recovery movement control order (RMCO).

The disgruntled man then left and came back with two of his friends, and proceeded to attack the foreign workers.

The victims suffered severe injuries to their heads and hands and were rushed to a private hospital for treatment, while their employer lodged a police report.

Acting Kuching district police chief Supt Merbin Lisa confirmed the arrest stating that the suspects were detained at their hideout at Batu Kawa at 5.40pm based on intelligence gathered by the Serious Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD).

According to Merbin, all three suspects acted aggressively upon arrest and were believed to be under the influence of drugs.

“The suspects were then taken to the CID of Kuching IPD. During initial investigation, items such as a machete, an iron rod and a car, which was used during the incident, were found.

“The urine test results on all the suspects were found to be positive for methamphetamine,” he said in a statement today (Sept 10).

Moreover, all three suspects have previous criminal records related to property crime and drugs.

“The suspect’s remand application was approved for seven days from Sept 11 to Sept 17 to assist police investigation,” he said.

All three suspects are being detained under Section 326 of the Penal Code which provides for an imprisonment term of up to 20 years, a fine and whipping if convicted.
