SIBU: Authorities have busted yet another illegal cryptocurrency mining operation here.
It is the third such case in just a month, sparking fresh alarm over power theft linked to digital currency activities.
The latest operation was discovered at a three-storey shophouse along Jalan Jerrwit Barat, where Syarikat SESCO Bhd (SESCO) and police found 12 mining servers powered by an illicit connection that bypassed the metering system entirely.
The setup, hidden beneath the building’s five-foot way, led to an estimated RM7,900 in monthly electricity losses for SESCO.
All illegal wiring was dismantled during the joint operation.
A police report has been lodged, and the building owner will be called in to assist with investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which carries penalties of up to RM200,000, five years’ jail, or both.
Sarawak Energy warned that unregulated crypto mining poses serious risks, including fire hazards, electric shocks, and infrastructure damage.
Property owners are urged to stay vigilant, as they may be held liable for illegal power use on their premises.
Members of the public can report suspicious electricity usage anonymously via SESCO’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or email customercare@sarawakenergy.com.
