KUCHING: The public will learn how to upcycle and recycle plastics and swap them for better alternatives through the Reuse or Refuse 2019 (ROR 2019) Campaign that was held recently.
ROR 2019 organised by Limkokwing Institute of Creative Technology (LICT) Faculty of Communication, Media and Broadcasting (FCMB) final year students aimed to spark awareness of reducing single-use plastics.
Its project manager Kelly Hiu mentioned during the opening ceremony yesterday at The Hills Shopping Mall, “The committee has stuck to their goals and missions since day one in hopes of Kuchingites to be more aware of the negative side-effects of single-use plastics as well as to keep Kuching a clean city.
“ROR would not have turned out the way it did without the passion, hard work and determination of the committees. Not to forget the lecturers who had guided us throughout the planning and execution of the event.”
ROR 2019 collaborated with several partners or sponsors, namely, The Hills, U-Tech, Wildlife Conservation Society, Sarawak Eco-Warriors, Kuching Beach Cleaners, Spativate and Jamvo to encourage people to discard their trash responsibly.

Kelly also took note of the Green Fashun pop-up market by Jamvo that has eco-friendly vendors which gave the attendees easy access to better alternatives, like thrift clothes.
The event filled with performances and workshops yesterday saw the 120 participants supporting the aims set by the project committee in making Kuching a clean city.
FCMB programme leader Afida Khasuma Zaidi stated that the event was part of the requirement for the students’ final semester modules of Corporate Event Management and Corporate Communication for which the students organise an event from scratch.
“Through this project, we are gearing the students to be industry-ready and be the best graduates that they can be,” she said.
ROR 2019 on Oct 12 picked up plastic wastes at three locations ― Kuching Waterfront, Carpenter Street and India Street. A total of 97 volunteers accumulated plastic waste weighing 32.3kg.
The committee also held a plastic collection drive at their campus from Sept 26 to Oct 25. They collected 35kg of plastic wastes, beating their goal of achieving 20kg.
