This “Snow White”-themed collection eschewed conventional ballgowns in favour of more contemporary designs, including two-piece ensembles that can be worn after a wedding.

It’s not just another dress

It was delightful to see a physical fashion show after two years of virtual appointments and runways.

A new style in bridal wear caught our attention as we were browsing the latest collection of stunning looks from both renowned designers and emerging brands.

This collection with a ‘Snow White’ theme ditched traditional ballgowns for more modern designs, with two-piece looks that can easily be worn after a wedding.

The show began with a wedding gown with a shorter hemline in the front that revealed some skin. A big bow over the shoulder adds a unique touch.

The designer

Louisa with her models at a fashion show.

Louisa Michael, a Sarawakian of Bidayuh descent, is a designer based in Kuala Lumpur.

The spunky-looking lady graduated from the Paris American Academy with a bachelor’s degree in fashion and even worked backstage for Elie Saab while interning at Anne Valarie Hash.

According to Louisa, her bridal boutique “Pretty in White” ensures that her gowns are created and produced with the utmost quality and workmanship through her dedicated specialists, which include experienced designers, cutters, and seamstresses.
She has recently joined the Straits Designers Gallery (SDG), which organised the show we saw.

According to her, the platform appears to be a good one for growing as a designer and learning about the fashion industry in depth with the help and guidance of the platform’s founder, Bill Keith.

First bridal show with SDG

“My collection is inspired by Snow White, a fictional character, and the main character in Walt Disney Productions’ first animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Many people are familiar with the character of Snow White, which was based on a fairy tale published in 1812 by the Grimms Brothers. A princess endowed with flawless and enchanting beauty inspired me to design a soft and romantic collection.

“This collection showcases Snow White’s beauty in my interpretation of sweet elegance and enduring love by capturing her gentle grace. The wedding gown is made of soft fabrics (silk chiffon, Duchesse satin, French tulle, and organza), shimmering beadwork (including Swarovski Crystals), and French lace appliques (mostly on the bodice and the skirt).

“Our crystal blusher veil, fingertip gathered tulle, and crystal tiara, among other accessories, will make a bride look like the fairest of them all on her wedding day!”

The six modern bridal outfits paraded by the models were body hugging at the bodice, and the “Fit to Flare” silhouette is similar to a mermaid style, according to her.

A mermaid wedding gown is one that hugs the body down to the knees before flaring at or below the knees for a sultry, sexy look. The difference, she said, is that the dress stays fitted until above the knee.

The flattering fit was then contrasted by a sudden flare at the knee, emphasising the bride’s body shape while also incorporating a romantic timeless beauty with the cut.

In terms of necklines, there was a sweetheart neckline that created a heart shape on the bodice, a V neckline, and a V shape on the front and back of the gown.

2023 bridal fashion trends

Classic, Elegant, or Timeless? There is no such thing as an ideal gown because everyone has their own preferences.

Many current trends are influenced by social media. Celebrity weddings have also catapulted bridal fashion into the spotlight, spawning trends that brides are looking to replicate today.

We’ve seen shorter hemlines and mini skirted gowns recently, so that could be a trend in 2023.

Mini veils are making a comeback, and we expect to see more modern and non-traditional versions of this classic accessory.

Sleeves are also making a comeback. Previously considered conservative, we are now seeing them on celebrity and royal brides.

The popularity of removable sleeves on convertible bridal gowns is allowing brides to embrace a two-in-one look. Remove the sleeves and you’ve got yourself an evening gown!

Young brides prefer a minimalist appearance and may look for new ways to combine traditional elegant styles with modern trends for their big day!
