KUCHING: Christians in Sarawak are welcoming a special Christmas gift this year with the announcement of a RM110 million allocation to the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) for 2025, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The allocation, approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg earlier this month, is set to provide crucial support for the construction, rehabilitation, and enhancement of houses of worship, as well as the maintenance of 20 mission schools across the state.

“This is a much-welcome Christmas gift to the Christians and a most anticipated New Year cheer to all others,” said Uggah, who is also the minister-in-charge of UNIFOR.

He expressed gratitude on behalf of religious communities, acknowledging the Premier’s thoughtfulness and commitment to fostering unity and harmony.

In 2024, UNIFOR received a similar allocation, which enabled assistance to 242 houses of worship at a cost of RM90 million, with an additional RM20 million allocated to mission schools.

The increased funding for 2025 is expected to extend support to even more religious institutions and schools in need.

“This is a continuing act of great magnanimity from a leader for us all to savour. To all the religious organizsations receiving these aids, please use them promptly for their intended purpose. We want your congregations to worship in comfort,” he added.

Uggah also called on religious organisations to utilise the funds effectively, stressing the importance of enhancing worship spaces and facilities for their respective communities.

As Sarawakians prepare to celebrate Christmas and usher in the New Year, he urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to unity and harmony, embodying the spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’ (Together in Unity).

He also encouraged visits to Christian open houses to strengthen ties and goodwill as ‘Orang Sarawak.’

Uggah reminded the public to give thanks to Almighty God for the blessings bestowed upon the state, its leaders, and its people, and to remain steadfast in achieving Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy towards becoming a high-income region by 2030.
