KUCHING: Higher education institutions must go beyond providing certificates, says Sarawak Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
He said they should also focus on shaping students with critical thinking skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and social responsibility.
He stressed that quality education should not only produce graduates but also individuals who can meaningfully contribute to society and the nation.
The Governor said this during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak, led by its Rector, Professor Dr Firdaus Abdullah, at the Astana Negeri Sarawak today.
The visit introduced the newly appointed Rector, who began his tenure on February 1, and also discussed UiTM’s roles in Sarawak’s higher education ecosystem.
Among the matters discussed were the challenges and opportunities in strengthening UiTM’s position as a key driver in developing Bumiputera human capital in the state.
Tun Wan Junaidi welcomed the discussion and expressed hope that the engagement would translate into concrete actions for the benefit of all parties involved.
Also present were Deputy Rector (Academic and International Affairs) Associate Professor Dr Mohammad Isa Mohamadin, Deputy Rector (Student Affairs) Associate Professor Dr Saimi Bujang, Deputy Rector (Research and Industry Networking) Professor Dr Juferi Idris, as well as senior administrative officers from UiTM Sarawak.
