KUCHING: Several temporary measures will be implemented to resolve the flash floods in areas under the jurisdiction of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the temporary measures will include the funding for the flood mitigation.

“Usually, when an issue arises, especially those requiring significant funding, proper planning, or consultancy, we first seek a temporary relief.

“We assess the situation, determine how to resolve it, estimate the costs, and then work on securing funding.

“We have identified a few key areas and are exploring the best approach to address them,” he said.

He was met by reporters during the welcoming lion dance and management meeting at MBKS here today.

Wee said the proposed short-term measures for the flood-prone areas are at Lorong 2, Lorong 17, and Lorong 10A of the Stutong area.

“For example, Lorong 2 experiences flooding during heavy rainfall due to existing drainage limitations.

“The proposed solution aims to address this issue effectively,” he added.

On another note, on the Stampin Resettlement Scheme, Wee said while waiting for the overall study to be completed, the government has already engaged a consultant to assess the entire area.

“However, since the study is still ongoing, temporary measures have been put in place to help drain excess water.

“When we visited the site, residents told us that flooding occurs once or twice a month and has become a common issue for them.

“Given this, the council has taken a more hands-on approach,” he said, noting that he made sure this time, everyone is on the ground — even on a public holiday, especially during the Chinese New Year as it is important to witness the situation firsthand.

“You cannot just rely on reports; you need to step out of the office and see the reality on-site.

“Without direct experience, it is difficult to fully grasp the extent of the issue or implement effective solutions,” he added.
