KUCHING: A teenage girl was fined RM2,000 in default two months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for participating in the illegal purchase of public lottery tickets last month.
The 18-year-old accused from Kampung Sungai Agas pleaded guilty to one charge under Section 9(1) of the Open Gambling Act 1953.
Magistrate Zaiton Anuar sentenced the accused to two months in prison if she failed to pay the fine.
According to the charges, she was accused of participating in the purchase of illegal public lottery tickets at a restaurant in Matang Jaya, at about 3.45 pm, on Nov 30.
Based on the facts of the case, on Nov 30, at about 3.45 pm, a police team from the IPD Padawan Criminal Investigation Department conducted a raid at a restaurant in Matang Jaya because it was believed that there was unlicensed public gambling activity.
During the raid, the police managed to arrest a teenage girl with equipment suspected of being used to buy illegal public lottery tickets.
As a result of an inspection of the WhatsApp application of the smartphone handed over by the accused, she was suspected of offering betting on football gambling and match schedules in addition to conducting the sale of public lottery tickets without a license.
In addition, case items were also seized such as two smart phone units, four pieces of paper for the schedule of the Qatar 2022 World Football match and cash amounting to RM420.
The results of the investigation from the analysis carried out by gambling experts found that the confiscation of case goods from the accused was positive because there were two complete illegal public lottery ticket purchases.
The prosecution of the case was handled by prosecuting officer ASP Rogayah Rosli while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
