KUCHING: Construction of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (UNIMAS) university teaching hospital is going smoothly and is expected to see its completion by next year.
During the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the university and Normah Medical Specialist Centre on Wednesday (Mar 2), UNIMAS vice chancellor Professor Datuk Mohamad Kadim Suaidi announced that the said hospital would have 300 beds.
“Construction of this teaching hospital is going to benefit the people of Sarawak in the future, especially in terms of specialised medical services and consultation,” he said.
He added that the hospital was not built to compete but to complement other already existing medical centres that have been operating for a long time.
“Besides, the collaboration with Normah will to some extent make UNIMAS an attractive place to work, especially for practicing clinicians who are still interested in doing academic work and side by side with students, by sharing their knowledge and experience.
“This is in line with the strategic focus that emphasises on talent excellence. Indeed, a positive atmosphere will produce an outstanding individual,” he said.
To date, UNIMAS has produced 59 specialist doctors since 2007.
