DARO: The construction of the Muara Lassa Bridge stands as concrete evidence of the commitment of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders, led by Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in strengthening rural infrastructure development.
According to Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, the development was the result of numerous voices from elected representatives in coastal areas who highlighted the need for this project following the announcement of the Pan Borneo Highway.
“This is a significant milestone, beginning with a meeting with the late chief minister Pehin Sri Adenan Satem (Tok Nan), where Datuk Aidel Lariwoo presented the proposed coastal road development plan involving nine bridges, worth nearly RM3 billion.
“Since then, this issue has been consistently raised in the State Legislative Assembly,” he said this when met by reporters at the soft launch ceremony of the Muara Lassa Bridge here today (Jan 9).
He added that after the transfer of power to the Abang Johari in 2017, plans for the construction of the Muara Lassa Bridge and the Paloh Bridge commenced immediately despite the political changes in the country at that time.
“The Sarawak government took bold steps to allocate state funding after federal government assistance was withdrawn,” he added.
Abdullah also emphasised that the coastal connectivity network is vital as the region experiences robust economic activities, especially in the fisheries and agriculture sectors.
This area, he said, is also a major source of food production, supporting the state’s food supply sustainability.
“I would like to express my gratitude to all the agencies involved, particularly the Public Works Department (PWD) and the district authorities, for fully supporting the aspirations of the coastal communities.
“This is tangible proof of the Sarawak Premier’s commitment to rural infrastructure development, which will further bridge the gap between urban and rural areas,” he said.
Representing the community of Pulau Bruit, Abdullah also expressed his gratitude for the project, which will connect the island via these bridges.
“We on Pulau Bruit pledge to contribute to the government through support from Sarawak’s largest fishermen’s association, as well as our commitment to the agriculture and food supply sectors,” he added.
