Tang Jie-Ee Wei exercise their inner tiger for semis bid

KUCHING: National mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei has once again outdone themselves after commanding a 21-16, 16-17 win over Thailand’s Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat duo in the India Open quarter-finals match in New Delhi today (Jan 17).

Competing as the world no pair 3, Tang Jie-Ee Wei showed their class early in the match, taking control from the outset.

However, midway through the first set, the Thai duo briefly pulled ahead, before the national shuttlers regained momentum to finish strong, sealing the set with a 21-16 power play.

The second set unfolded differently, with the Malaysians trailing 6-12 at one point. But, showing their resilience, Tang Jie and Ee Wei went on a remarkable 10-point streak to lead 16-12 and ultimately closed out the match with a 21-17 victory, after 43 minutes of intense play.

With their victory seized, they are now fated to face off against France’s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in the semis tomorrow.

Meanwhile, world no 4 pair, Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie are also in the semis run after obliterating Taiwan’s, Yang Po-hsuan and Hu Ling-fang in a clean 21-11, 21-15 game, whereas Soh Wooi Yik and Aaron Chia move to the men’s doubles semis after winning 21-18, 21-18 against Thailand’s Kedren Kittinupong-Dechapol Puavaranukroh pair.

National women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan have also secured their slot in semis after beating Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto with a 21-18, 21-19 win.
